Art School

The Art School is placed besides the second Herbal Garden on a six acre plot of Auroville land nearby the villages Alankuppam and Raya Pettai.

 

Our targets are developing skills for the local people to enhance future possibilities, the spreading of knowledge to make people more independent and coping with traumas through making music, singing and dancing.

Activities in the Art School:

1. Provide work and training for women who are living in difficult circumstances
 2. Music and dance lessons for the children of Isai Ma(i)yam and from surrounding villages
 3. Workshops for handicapped children
 4. For the music students of Isai Ma(i)yam who have completed their study we create space so they  can give music lessons or can work in one of the workshops
 5. Providing space for rehearsal of the music group.

 

The Art school is used for teaching music and dance as well for the music band for practising and other forms of arts like dancing for the students of the Isai Ma(i)yam and for the local village kids. Furthermore there is space to experiment with different forms of handicrafts, like i.e. a hand weaving machine and a clay wheel. There is coming a library where children from the villages can read books. There will also be one room for arts like painting and clay etc. The other two rooms are for the music lessons and for storing the music instruments.

It also gives space to the group of handicapped children that comes three times a week for enjoying the gardens and participating in all forms of handicrafts.

Mother India

In the Art School there is a skill training workshop for women from the surrounding villages. Especially women from lower casts, living in difficult circumstances, are working there. With this work they can support themselves and create more stability in their lives. The regular income improves their life standard and supports their children’s education continuously. They learn to make different handicrafts especially stitching bed covers and bags. The handmade products are sold through our business “Mother India”. In future it is planned to finance all the projects of Martuvam Healing Forest through this selling.
